Dr. David Schrader, Executive Director of the American Philosophical Association and member of St. Paul’s, will conduct a three week session on “Luther and Darwin” on April 6, 14, and 20.

The first session will explore the response of Luther and his early followers to the great scientific controversy of his own day, the controversy over Galileo.  It will include a look at the church’s response to the work of the great early Lutheran astronomer, Johannes Kepler (1571-1630).

The second session will introduce participants to Georges Cuvier (1769-1832), a Lutheran precursor of Darwin’s, who is regarded by many scholars as the father of modern comparative anatomy.

The third and final session will explore the contours of a theologically appropriate Lutheran response to evolutionary biology, focusing in particular on the decision of Lutheran U.S. District Judge John Jones’s decision in the Dover, PA, Intelligent Design case of 2005.
